Seven records were broken on Saturday’s final day as GC Foster College retained their male and female NCB Intercollegiate Track and Field Championships titles.
The men’s team topped the standing with 245 points, well ahead of UTech 166, UWI 119, Mico 57 and Knox 38 while on the female side, the Angels institution ended with 194 points to beat UTech 170, UWI 141, Mico 69 and Church Teachers’ College, 34.
Sashalee Forbes, a member of Jamaica’s 4x100m relay team at Rio 2016 Olympics, completed the women’s sprint double. Forbes, who ran an aggressive curve before pulling away in the straight, stopped the clock in a new record and personal best 22.72 seconds. The time erased the old record of 22.89 set by Sherone Simpson of UTech did in in 2005.
UTech’s Shimayra Williams, 22.93, was second while Shanta Deer, also of GC Foster College, was third in 23.83.
Demish Gaye of GC Foster, who literally by himself, was also impressive as he cruised around the track in 45.24 to erase his 2016 mark of 45.57 in the men’s 400m. Closest to him was his teammate Romario Williams in 46.52.
Ronald Levy of UTech also broke his previous meet record of 13.72, set in 2015, by taking the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.41.
Bahamian Tamara Myers, who is representing UWI, broke her second record of the meet. This time she added the triple jump record of 13.26m, which was good enough to beat Shanika Ricketts’ 2015 mark of 13.12m
Daniel Glave was the other individual record-breaker on the day with 3:58.33 to remove 3:59.40 in the men’s 1500m final.
The team records went to UTech with 3:33.34 in the women’s 4x400m; GC Foster College 38.89 and 3:05.59 in the men’s 4x100m and 4x400m finals, respectively.
GC Foster College also dominated other finals with Verone Chambers, 51.70 to beat Dawnalee Loney (Mico), 52.08, and Junelle Bromfield (UTech), 52.69 in the women’s 400m, along with Yanique Thompson, who ran 13.13 to beat UTech’s Williams, 13.18, in the women’s 100m hurdles.
GC Foster College’s pair of Chadic Hines, 20.49, Oshane Bailey, also 20.49 battled right down to the line in men’s 200m final.
Mico’s Samantha James, who added the 1500m, 4:47.35 and 3,000m 10:50.15 to her 800m tile, was named Female Champion.
Oshane Archibald, who won the 5,0000m in 15:21.40 to add to his 3,000m steeplechase, along with Glave and Demar Gayle shared the Male Athlete award.
