Praught first Jamaican 3000m steeplechase finalist

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Aisha Praught became the first Jamaican to qualify for the women’s 3000m steeplechase finals.

Praught advanced to the finals belatedly as she was originally eighth in heat three of the preliminaries on Saturday (aug 13) with 9:35.79, well outside of the top three finish required.

However, she fell in her race along with Ethopian Etenesh Rio and Sarah Treacy of Ireland. Following a successful appeal by the Jamaican team she was later advanced to the finals for Monday, 11:15am.

Praught is the first Jamaican to qualify for the finals of an Olympic event longer than the 800m.
