Thompson-Herah, Clayton Headline Jamaican Sprint Charge at Luzern

Elaine Thompson-Herah and Tina Clayton will headline Friday’s (17 Jul) Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, when the two Jamaicans anchor a loaded women’s 100m field that figures to be the marquee attraction of the evening on the shores of Lake Lucerne in Switzerland.

Double Olympic champion Thompson-Herah returns to action alongside Clayton and fellow Jamaican Jonielle Smith, giving the Caribbean nation a formidable three-woman presence in the sprint. The trio will be tested by Switzerland’s Mujinga Kambundji, who is making her own much-anticipated comeback in Luzern after giving birth.

Jamaica’s sprint depth carries into the men’s 100m as well, where Ackeem Blake and Gary Card headline a field that includes five men who have run inside 10.00 this season. Blake and Card will look to hold off South Africa’s Bayanda Walaza and Bradley Nkoana in one of the day’s most anticipated races.

Jamaica’s Rasheed Broadbell and Tyler Mason take on home favorite Jason Joseph in the 110m hurdles, along with South Africa’s Antonio Alkana and Mondray Barnard, while compatriots Demisha Roswell and Rayniah Jones line up in the women’s 100m hurdles against Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska. Ireland’s Rhasidat Adeleke, meanwhile, steps down to focus on the 200m.

Jamaica’s Ackelia Smith rounds out the Caribbean contingent in the long jump, squaring off against Switzerland’s Annik Kalin in a pit expected to produce big distances.

Elsewhere on the program, France’s Renelle Lamote leads the women’s 800m field, Britain’s George Mills races the 3000m, and Switzerland’s Timothe Mumenthaler β€” the reigning European champion β€” headlines the 200m alongside Rome medallist William Reais and Australia’s Aidan Murphy.

The men’s javelin brings together Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, Germany’s Julian Weber, Olympic champion Thomas Rohler, Croatia’s Sara Kolak and Norway’s Sigrid Borge, while the pole vault field features Wilma Heltela, Kat Stefanidi and European champion Angelica Moser.
