NCAA D1 Championships Day 1: International Stars Shine in Eugene

Day one of the NCAA Division I Championships in Eugene, Oregon delivered strong performances across the field events and opening track prelims, with several international athletes stepping up to claim early victories.

Zimbabwe’s Tafadzwa Chikomba headlined the field event results, winning the long jump with a mark of 8.37m (-0.7). Juriad Hughes finished second with a personal best of 8.25m (1.7), making it a competitive battle for the top spot.

Nigeria’s Chinecherem Nnamdi led the javelin with a throw of 82.26m, while Greece’s Angelos Mantzouranis won the hammer at 75.78m. Benjamin Smith put the shot 21.04m to take first place, edging out South Africa’s JL Van Rensburg, a World U20 medalist, who posted a personal best of 20.33m. Dyson Wicker cleared 5.85m to win the pole vault, with Logan Hammer clearing 5.75m in second.

Eritrea’s Habtom Samuel claimed the first track final of the meet, winning the 10,000m in 27:51.31.

On the track, Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi ran the fastest 100m heat of the day, clocking 9.94 (-1.1). Jaiden Reid of the Cayman Islands followed in 9.95, matching his national record. Reid also advanced in the 200m with a 20.05 (-0.1).

Other notable prelim performances included Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi running 44.73 in the 400m, alongside U20 athlete Sidi Njie at 44.82. Ja’Qualon Scott posted 48.59 in the 400m hurdles, Rivaldo Marshall of Jamaica advanced in the 800m with a 1:45.05, Connor McCormick set a personal best of 3:35.81 in the 1500m, and Kenya’s Collins Kipngok ran 8:24.39 in the 3000m steeplechase.

Auburn’s international relay squad, featuring Fahmi (Malaysia), Ajayi (Nigeria), Kresley (Mexico), and T. Davis, set a championships record of 37.75 in the 4x100m heats. LSU posted the fastest 4x400m relay time of the day at 3:00.54.

Ben Barton sits atop the decathlon standings after day one with 4,414 points.
