Noah Lyles celebrates after winning the men's 100m at the Golden Gala in Rome

The Golden Gala in Rome wrapped up with a memorable finish in the men’s 100 meters, as Noah Lyles crossed the line first to claim another Diamond League victory. The American sprint star, who also won in Tokyo earlier this season, made it clear he came to Rome with one thing in mind.

“I am not showing up anywhere to lose. I am here to win,” Lyles said after the race.

Lyles described a strong build-up heading into the meet, crediting a productive block session the day before. He said he knew the race was his with about 10 meters left on the track, and was already thinking about how he would celebrate before he even hit the finish line. He added that while this season may look different, his goals have not changed.

The bigger surprise of the race came from Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon, who finished second in a time of 9.94 seconds — a new national record. The performance confirmed that Eseme is in strong form heading into the second half of the season. He shared that his top target after claiming the African Championships title last month is the Commonwealth Games.

Away from the sprint events, the standout field moment at the Golden Gala came from Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage, who threw the javelin 92.62 meters to take the win. The throw was selected as the Omega Moment of the meet.

As for Lyles, his next appearance will be at the Golden Spike in Ostrava, where he is set to run the 150 meters against rising sprint talent Gout Gout. After that, he plans to take a short break before heading into the U.S. National Championships.
