The sold-out Golden Spike meet in Ostrava brings together world-class athletes across multiple events, headlined by Noah Lyles chasing a 150m world record and a blockbuster 800m showdown.
The 65th edition of the Ostrava Golden Spike, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet, is set for Tuesday (16 June) with every ticket sold and a packed card of elite competition. The main session begins at 18:00 CET.
Among the most watched matchups of the evening is the 800m, where Femke Bol makes her outdoor debut at the distance against Audrey Werro. Bol, better known for her 400m and 400m hurdles dominance, says the race is about gathering experience rather than chasing a result. “I think it’s mostly just executing what we want to see,” she said. “Some things from training that we would like to see in competition, and then work from there to the next races.”
Werro arrives in Ostrava with serious momentum. The Swiss runner posted 1:53.98 at the Stockholm Diamond League and is among those who believe an 800m world record will fall this season. The wavelights on Tuesday are set for a 56-second opening lap, matching the pace used in Stockholm. “Ostrava is an important race for me because I still feel there are things I need to learn,” Werro said. “I want to become more confident, but Stockholm gave me a lot of confidence already. Now it’s mainly about enjoying the race.”
The 150m is shaping up as one of the night’s headline moments. Noah Lyles will line up alongside Gout Gout and Sinesipho Dambile with a shot at the world best of 14.92, set by Kishane Thompson earlier this year. Lyles, who describes 2025 as an off year from his usual event schedule, said the distance caught his attention for a simple reason.
“I saw the world record and felt it was a bit slow, so we need to make that a lot faster,” Lyles said. Lyles also pointed to Ostrava’s history of record-breaking performances as part of his decision. Usain Bolt has competed at the Golden Spike, and Wayde van Niekerk ran a 300m world record at the same venue. “We decided the 300m wasn’t for me this year. The 150m felt like the perfect middle ground,” Lyles added.
The shot put features a strong head-to-head between New Zealand’s Tom Walsh and Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri. In the pole vault, Katie Moon and Emmanouil Karalis headline their respective fields and will compete at the same time on the same pitch. The 1000m draws attention for a different reason, with Mark English and Isaac Nader targeting a fast time. The European record in the event is 2:12.18, set by Seb Coe back in 1981.
Local fans will have reasons to cheer as well. World Indoor 400m champion Lurdes Gloria Manuel lines up in the 400m against Czech 400m hurdles standout Emma Zapletalová. In the 100m, Karolína Maňasová and Ewa Swoboda will look to push the European lead of 10.97. The meeting also includes World Indoor champions Jordan Anthony in the 100m and Jakub Szymanski in the 110m hurdles, along with Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage, who recently emerged as a rising name in the Asian javelin scene.
