British Virgin Islands sprint star Adaejah Hodge continued to strengthen her status as one of the hottest names in collegiate sprinting on Thursday night, cruising into the women’s 200m final at the SEC Outdoor Championships at the Hutsell-Rosen Track on the campus of Auburn University.
Hodge, the world leader this season in the women’s 100m with 10.77, looked smooth and composed as she captured her heat in 22.54 seconds, positioning herself as one of the clear favourites heading into the final.
The Georgia freshman led a strong Caribbean showing during the evening session, with Jamaica’s Gabrielle Matthews also progressing to the women’s 200m final. Competing for Florida, Matthews secured qualification with 22.74 from heat eight.
In the men’s 200m, Cayman Islands sprinter Jaiden Reid advanced for LSU after producing 20.71 to automatically qualify from his heat. The event was led by Arkansas’ Jelani Watkins, who clocked 20.45, while Traunard Folson of Tennessee and Auburn’s Israel Okon both ran 20.52.
Jamaican athletes also impressed in the men’s 800m, where Arkansas teammates Rivaldo Marshall and Tyrice Taylor each won their respective heats to move confidently into the final. Marshall stopped the clock at 1:46.85 while Taylor topped his heat in 1:47.01.
The women’s 400m hurdles featured another Caribbean qualifier as US Virgin Islands athlete Michelle Smith advanced for Georgia with a time of 56.05. Arkansas’ Saira Prince led the qualifiers with 55.72 ahead of South Carolina’s Akala Garrett at 55.89.
SEC Outdoor Championships Distance titles were decided in the 10,000m finals. Alabama freshman Caren Kiplagat claimed the women’s crown in 32:56.93 ahead of Florida’s Judy Chepkoech, who finished second in 33:03.04.
Arkansas secured another victory in the men’s 10,000m through Ernest Cheruiyot, who won in 29:34.34, with Alabama’s Dismus Lokira taking second place in 29:36.88.
With multiple Caribbean athletes safely through to championship finals, attention now turns to the remaining days of competition where regional athletes will continue chasing SEC titles against one of the deepest collegiate fields in the world.
