The Shanghai/Suzhou Diamond League event lived up to its hype, featuring standout performances across various disciplines.

In the women’s events, while attention initially focused on Sha’Carri Richardson in the 200m, it was Daryll Neita who stole the show. Richardson was losing for the second straight week. Marileidy Paulino‘s commanding victory in the 400m and 18-year-old Mekedes Alemeshete’s surprising triumph in the 5000m added to the excitement.

Also, on the track, Beatrice Chepkoech‘s dominant solo steeplechase win and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn’s stellar hurdles performance took center stage. In the field events, Marthe Koala’s excellence in the long jump and Chase Jackson’s shot put prowess were noteworthy.

Among the men, Akani Simbine stunned the field in the 100m, while Selemon Barega’s record-breaking run in the 5000m made a lasting impression. Daniel Roberts displayed his skill in the 110m hurdles, and Armand Duplantis soared to victory in the pole vault.

Women:

  • 200m: Sha’Carri Richardson remains out of form, finishing third in 23.11. Daryll Neita claimed a clear victory in 22.62.
  • 400m: Marileidy Paulino secured a clear victory, clocking 50.89, slightly behind expectations. USA’s Talitha Biggs was 2nd in 51.77 and Barbadian Soda Williams got 3rd in 52.00.
  • 5000m (non-DL): 18-year-old Mekedes Alemeshete surprised by topping the Ethiopian-dominated competition with a PB and early world lead of 14:36.70.
  • 3000m steeple: Beatrice Chepkoech won solo but slower (9:07.36). Gesa Felicitas Krause made an excellent comeback at third (9:16.24) in her first steeple since 2022.
  • 100m hurdles: Jasmine CAMACHO-QUINN repeated her Xiamen victory with 12.63. Tobi Amusan was disqualified after a false start. Bahamian world indoor champion Devynne Charlton took second in 12.62 and American Masai Russell, 12.76, fourth. World champion Danielle Williams, 12.74 and Megan Tapper, 12.83, were 3rd and 7th in the event.
  • Long jump: Marthe Koala dominated with a jump of 6.68m.
  • Shot put: World champ Chase JACKSON claimed victory with the first outdoor 20+ mark of the season (20.03). Jamaican Danniel THOMAS-DODD finished in 8th with a mark of 19.08.
  • Discus (non-DL): Valarie Allman led from the beginning, improved her SB to 69.86 SB in fifth and won again over Feng (67.11), fourth Izabela da Silva of Brazil with PB and Paris standard (64.66), World champion Tausaga with three fails.
  • Javelin: It was a tough season opener for World champion Haruka Kitaguchi, starting with 55m attempt, she made the Top 3 in fifth, and took the victory in the last attempt (62.97).

Men:

  • 100m: American champions Christian Coleman and Fred Kerley were defeated by South African champion Akani Simbine (10.01). Jamaicans Ackeem BLAKE, 10.23, and Rohan WATSON, 10.29, were 5th and 6th respectively.
  • 800m: Slimane MOULA secured victory in 1:44.55 over Wyclife KINYAMAL (1:44.88).
  • 5000m: Selemon Barega set a meeting record and outdoor world lead of 12:55.68. Biniam Mehary also impressed with a PB of 12:56.37.
  • 110m hurdles: Daniel ROBERTS comfortably won in 13.12. Jamaica’s Olympic Games champion Hansle PARCHMENT (JAM) took 3rd with 13.26
  • High jump: World Indoor champion Hamish KERR cleared 2.31m, with Mutaz Essa Barshim also improving to 2.29m. Jamaican Christoff BRYAN cleared 2.16m for 8th.
  • Pole vault: Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis dominated with a new meeting record of 6.00m.
  • Long jump: Marquis Dendy outperformed Chinese rivals with a jump of 8.05m. Jamaican Carey McLeod was 4th with 7.93.
