The Melbourne Track Classic has been promoted to Continental Tour Gold status and renamed in honor of Maurie Plant, a beloved figure in the world of track and field.

On February 23, Lakeside Stadium will host the event, which will offer a prize money pool of more than $200,000 and increased world ranking points.

The meet is expected to attract some of the top athletes in the world and is part of the 13-meet Continental Tour Gold series, which is the second-highest level on the World Athletics calendar.

Plant, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 66, was well-respected and popular in the athletics community and held a variety of roles, including agent, meet promoter, commentator, and confidant to some of the recognized names in the sport, including Usain Bolt, Sally Pearson, and Cathy Freeman.

The 2023 Maurie Plant Meet is set to take place just a week after the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst.
