Mutaz Essa Barshim (QAT) won the high jump by clearing 2.37, the best mark of 2022, to take gold at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22.
This was the 3rd consecutive World title for Barshim, the most ever, breaking a tie he had with Javier Sotomayor (CUB). Only Mutaz Essa Barshim has ever won consecutive men’s high jump titles.
Barshim took 6 jumps, clearing each height on his 1st try.
Six nations had previously won the event twice, but Barshim’s victory makes Qatar the 1st nation with 3 men’s high jump titles.
Woo Sang-Hyeok (KOR) won the silver medal, the 1st medal for Korea in the event. Their best previous finish was =6th by Lee Jin-Taek in 1999.
Bronze went to Andriy Protsenko of Ukraine, clearing 2.33. Gianmarco Tamberi (ITA) also cleared 2.33, but Protsenko took 3rd with a 1st attempt clearance at that height.
Japan’s Tomohiro Shinno finished 8th. He is the 1st Japanese high jumper to make the World Championship final. Their previous best finish was =14th in qualifying by Naoto Tobe in 2019.
