Clayton, who dominated the race from start to finish, powered home in a huge personal best of 11.09 seconds. She bettered her previous best of 11.17 to win way ahead of Namibia’s Beatrice Masiling, 11.39.

“The feeling is unexplainable,” Clayton said.

“It’s really good to win this gold medal and registering a personal best time. I am really grateful for the support offered to me by my parents and coaches, and I know they are really proud of me after this result.

“It feels good to know that Jamaica has successfully defended this title after Brianna Williams won it in 2018.”

Williams won the sprint double in Tampere 2018. Before Wiliams, Veronica Campbell-Brown was the first Jamaican winner in 2000.

Third place finisher Melissa Gutschmidt of SUI was even further back in 11.51.

Kerrica Hill, the other Jamaican, finished seventh in 11.67.

In the day’s other final, which had Jamaica’s Kobe Lawrence, an eighth-place finish with 18.32m was his best shot put mark.

Cuban Juan Carley VÁZQUEZ GÓMEZ won the event with a throw of 19.73m.

Jamaica’s Ackelia Smith qualified for the women’s triple jump final with a mark of 12.99m.
