Thompson Leads MVP Sweep; Tracey Takes Men’s 100m Title

KINGSTON — Elaine Thompson and Tyquendo Tracey captured the women’s and men’s 100m titles at the 2018 Jamaica National Championships on Day 2 Friday night at the National Stadium.

Thompson chased down Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson, who produced a new personal best, to lead an MVP Track Club clean sweep of the medal places in the women’s 100m final.

The Olympic champion recovered from a moderate start and used a strong finish to catch and beat Fraser-Pryce, who led for almost 95 metres.

Thompson’s winning time was 11.01 seconds, while Fraser-Pryce, who continues to improve on her return to the track after the birth of her son, took second in 11.09.

Quartermile specialist Jackson produced a new personal best of 11.13 to take third.

Meanwhile, the men’s race went to Tyquendo Tracey, another MVP athlete and he ran a personal best of 10.07 seconds for first place.

Kenroy Anderson was second in 10.24, with Nesta Carter getting third in 10.31.

Julian Forte, who was one of the favourites to win the title, pulled up injured midway through the race and walked across the line.

Yohan Blake was disqualified dispite running under protest and winning his heat, while Commonwealth Games champion Kemar Bailey-Cole walkout of the race in the semis.
