Jamaicans, Junelle Bromfield and Tiffany James won their respective 400m heats in the afternoon session of Day I, to secure semi-final spots at the IAAF World Under-20 Championships being staged at the Zawisza Stadium in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

James, a first year student at Mico University College, was the fastest on the day with 52.98 seconds. Ivanna Avramchuk of Ukraine was second in the race, 54.71.

James said the reason for the fast time was because “I just wanted to get a good blow out.”

“It was a pretty good race,” commented James. “I came out with one aim and that was just to qualify for the next round,” the 19-year-old added.

St. Elizabeth Technical Student, Bromfield, like her teammate, was very easy in topping heat two in 53.21. She finished ahead of Ukraine’s Dzhois Koba, 53.74.

The semi-finals are on Day II, Wednesday.

Bahamian Shaquania Dorsett, 54.55secs, moved forward as one of the fastest losers from heat one.
