Diana Levy, Jamaica’s hammer throw record holder, said she has accomplished her one of her “biggest dreams” in the sport.
Levy has become the first Jamaican in the event, to qualify for the Olympic Games.
She threw 71.48m to win at the Last Chance meet for Throws and Horizontal Jumps athletes, on Saturday (25 June).
The mark is also a new National record, beating her previous best of 69.01m done in May 2015.
“I have no words that can adequately describe this feeling,” she said.
“I’m so incredibly and unbelievably blessed! After countless injuries, far more failures than successes and a heartbreaking end to my collegiate career, I am so proud to say that I have accomplished one of my biggest dreams,” explained Levy.
“I have thrown (the) Olympic Standard and will be joining Jamaica’s track and field team in Rio this year for the 2016 Olympics! All glory be to God because everyone who knows my struggle over the last couple of years, (also) knows that I would not have been able to accomplish this without His guidance!
“Thank you so much to all of my friends and family for their unconditional love and support. And a special thank you to my coach, Andy Kokhanovsky, for not giving up on me. The feeling is surreal, and hasn’t yet sunken in, but we did it guys! WE MADE IT!!!!,” concluded the 27-year-old athlete in her social media post.
Levy joins discus athletes, Kellion Knibb, Tarasue Barnett and Shadae Lawrence, as female Jamaican throwers to qualify for the Olympic Games.
