Lloyd, Glasford standout on opening day of Coca-Cola Inter-Schools Champs

Antigua and Barbuda’s biggest sporting event, the 2016 Inter-Schools Championships opened on Friday with some interesting performances here at the Yasco Sports Complex.

With Saturday and Sunday expected to be the biggest days in terms of viewership, Princess Margaret Secondary boys and Clare Hall Secondary girls have positioned themselves well after day one.

Sheldon Noble of Antigua Grammar School won the Under-18 boys high jump with a clearance of 1.90m, beating Harlan James of Clare Hall Secondary 1.85m.

Malika Maynard of Clare Hall topped the girls’ event (Under-18) high jump with 1.48m to better Solesha Joseph of Antigua Girls High 1.35m.

Princess Margaret finished 1-2 in the Under-15 boys’ shot put with Jaquan Benjamin 11.26m and Jayden Martin 9.04m.

In the day’s other final, Dahlia Barnes had the best leap of 5.27m in the Under-15 girls’ long jump. Princess Margaret’s Alexis Nicholas finished second with her best effort of 4.42m.

However, Antigua Girls School’s 13-year-old Joella Lloyd and Kobe Glasford of Clare Hall were the standout performers on the opening day, which also saw action in the 100m, 400m, 800m and 4x100m heats.

Lloyd recorded the only sub 1-minute 400m time after crossing the line in 59.40 in the Under-15 girls’ event. She was also the best of all the three age groups of the 100m with 12.20.

 Glasford was the fastest boy on the day with 10.60 in the Under-18 100m heats
