Jamaican-based Zharnel Hughes has been cleared to represent Great Britain. The 19-year-old sprinter trains alongside Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake at the Racers Track Club in Kingston.
The Anguillan-born Hughes won the Carifta Games Under-20 title in 2013 and the Jamaican High Schools Championship 100m record in 10.12sec in 2014.
Hughes was quoted as saying, “I have always known if I was to run at the Olympics it would be in a British vest and that is how I have always dreamt it would be.”
He will now compete with the likes of European champions Adam Gemili and James Dasaolu and the world indoor champion Richard Kilty for his place on Great Britain’s team.
Former Turks and Caicos sprinter Delano Williams, who attended Munro College in Jamaica, two years, also got the green light to represent Great Britain. He did so at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
