Time and Patience of St Catherine are the early leaders after one final at the end of the first day in the 34th INSPORTS/Seprod Primary Schools Athletics Championship at the National Stadium.
The Bog Walk-based institution struck gold in the Open Girls’ ball throw with Deandra Haye winning with a distance of 49.45m from Alexia McLeary of Rousseau, 48.21m and Clan Carthy’s Adriana Johnson, 47.63 metres.
Trailing the leaders are six-time champions Rousseau Primary and Red Hills – joint second with seven points – followed by Clan Carthy (six), Dupont (five), defending and five-time champions Naggo Head (two) and Holy Family on one point.
The championship takes a break on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 in respect of Teacher’s Day before resumingThursday, May 8, 2014 through to Saturday’s final day.
Meantime in preliminary round action on the day, the top schools held their own in the sprint relays in all four classes but encountered stiff challenge from lesser known opponents competing in these championships for the first time.
One record has been broken already, this materializing in the qualifying rounds of Class 3 boys’ 4x100m relay, as Southborough advanced to the final in a new meet record of 54.9 seconds, smashing the 56.05 set by Portsmouth in 2011.
Nonetheless, all major contenders for this year’s INSPORTS/Seprod crown are through to the relay finals with Greater Portmore, last year’s third-place finisher, in the best position of the lot.
