DOHA, Qatar – The 2017 IAAF Diamond League Series runs off on Friday, May 5 and several Caribbean athletes will be in action.
Double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson, former World 100m record holder Asafa Powell and Bahamian world leader Steven Gardiner will be involve in big showdowns on the night.
Thompson of Jamaica, and World champion Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands will take the spotlight in the women’s 200m.
Jamaicans Veronica Campbell-Brown, a two-time Olympic champion, and Simone Facey, will also be involve in the hot 200m contest.
The men’s 100m will have Powell, Justin Gatlin of USA and Canadian Andre De Grasse. Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis will also be in the field.
Gardiner is the man to beat in the 400m as his 44.26 for a national record at the Grenada Invitational in April puts him ahead of American LaShawn Merritt.
Other Jamaicans down to take part at the meet – Natoya Goule is in the women’s 800m, Megan Simmonds in the 100m hurdles, Aisha Praught in the 3,000m steeplechase, and Annsert Whyte in the men’s 400m hurdles.
Donald Thomas of Bahamas is in the men’s high jump.
