Elaine Thompson-Herah defended her Olympic Games 100m in emphatic fashion. She achieved the Tokyo 2020 women’s 100m title by setting new records.
Thompson-Herah, who came up alongside teammate Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce midway, pulled away before crossing the line with her left hand pointing in celebration. The clock stopped in 10.61 seconds, a new Olympic Games record and Jamaican record.
“I accept this time now because there is nothing more to prove,” said Thompson-Herah. “I have been through so much, ups and downs. I heard that I am mental, I heard that I can’t win a medal, so today I have to give God thanks that I came out here to retain my title.”
“Last month this time, I didn’t think I would be here to retain my title.
“To see that I was celebrating 5-10 metres (before the finish line), showed that there are more to come,” said Thompson-Herah.
The time, which beat Fraser-Pryce’s national record of 10.63, makes Thompson-Herah the fastest woman alive. Florence Griffith Joyner held the previous Olympic Games record of 10.62.
Fraser-Pryce finished second in 10.74 and new comer to the 100m, Shericka Jackson, finished 3rd in 10.76 for a Jamaica clean sweep.
