Terrance Jones, NCAA 60m Champion, Breaks Bahamian National Record at Tom Jones Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (April 15) – Julien Alfred wasn’t the only Caribbean collegian to set national records last Saturday. Terrance Jones, the Texas Tech Junior and reigning NCAA 60m champion, opened his 100m outdoor season with a Co-Bahamian National Record and World Lead at 9.91 in the Tom Jones Invitational.

Jones had a strong performance in the 200m on April 1st, winning the Texas Relays in 20.05 (also a World Lead at the time). He continued to prove himself to be in world-beater form, outlasting teammate Courtney Lindsey (10.04) and FSU’s Amir Willis (10.08) with a 1.0 tailwind. Jones improved his former 100m personal best of 10.03 from last season’s NCAA championships by over a tenth of a second.

His time is tied with Oblique Seville’s 9.91, who also ran last weekend at the Miramar Invitational, for the world lead and with former Bahamian sprinter Derrick Atkins for the all-time lead mark in the Bahamas 100m history.

In fact, Jones’ result from this collegiate section proved to be faster than the professional ranks, with the likes of Noah Lyles and newly signed ASICS sprinter Joseph Fahnbulleh finishing their Olympic Development race in 9.95 and 9.98, respectively.

  1. From had ran the world lead in the 60m., i wondered what kind of time he would have put up in the 100m or 200m. May he continue to excel as he represents his country in international meets.
