Christopher Taylor was in spanking form form on Tuesday's opening day of Champs 2014. Many spent the most part of the evening's session talking about Taylor's stunning 48.71 in the Class 3 boys 400m heats.
The 13-year-old Calabar athlete ran a very fast first 100 metres, eased down on the backstretch before blazed the final 200m to remove the old mark of 49.13 set by Nathaniel Bann (KC) in 2013.
He was later quoted as saying he wants to run 48.0 in the final set for Saturday, 29 March 2014. "Coach told me I should just get the record out of the way, so I just went out there and took the record," he said.
Meanwhile, all the big names in the one lap event made progress to the semi-finals.
Javon Francis did not look at his best, but did enough to top his heat of the boys Class 1 400m in 48.04. St. Jago’s Nathon Allen recorded the days fastest time with 45.57 and second best Lennox Williams of Manchester High with 47.65.
Nathaniel Bann (KC), who earlier watched Taylor demolished his Class 3 400m, booked his place in the Class 2 boys 400m with 49.49secs. Anthony Carpenter of Calabar also did 49.49, however, Petersfield’s Devaughn Ellington ran the fastest time of 49.07.
Tiffany James of Papine ran 54.70 to be the top qualifier in the girls Class 2 400m. Next best was Hydel’s Taqece Duggan 55.23 and Guys Hill’s Alesha Kelly 55.44.
Sidney Marshall of Manchester (11.45) and Kimeone McLeod of St. Jago 10.76 are the top qualifiers in classes 3 and 4 80mH and 70mH respectively.
The javelin boys, long jump class 1 boys, 2,000 open steeplechase for boys, girls discus class 1, high jump girls class 1 and class 3 boys long jump have all decided on finalists.
