Fast times and surprises dominated Saturday’s first day of the Jamaica Carifta Games Trials at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Jhevaughn Matherson of Kingston College won the boys’ Under-20 100m final in 10.25 seconds.
Edwin Allen’s Kevona Davis ran a personal best 11.43 to take the Under-18 girls 100m final ahead of American-born Briana Williams, 11.66.
Tyreke Wilson of Calabar was the winner of the Under-18 boys’ 100m final in 10.57.
Calabar’s Christopher Taylor jogged home in 46.65 to advance to the Under-20 boys’ 400m final, set for Sunday’s final day.
Edwin Allen’s Patrice Moody, Champs 100m Class 1 defending champion, and Kimone Shaw of St. Jago, were among the surprises on the day. They will not make the team to Curaçao (April 15-17).
Moodie failed to make the final of the Under-20 girls 100m while Shaw finished fifth in the final won by Kashieka Cameron of Edwin Allen topped the event final in 11.49.
Tyrese Reid from Spot Valley won the Under-18 boys’ 800m final in an impressive 1:51.11, the fastest schoolboy time in Jamaica this year, to surprise many.
In the Under-20 boys final, Ackeem Coley of Rusea’s ran 1:52.11 to take top honours.
Cemore Donald of Edwin Allen won the Under-18 girls 800m final in 2:08.55 while Chrissani May of Holmwood was the Under-20 victor in 2:09.04.
Timor Barrett of St. Jago High won the Under-20 400m hurdles in 51.49.
