BELLINZONA (SUI, Sep 12): With one meet left to run in Japan, the World Athletics Continental Tour 2022 wrapped up in Europe with Galà dei Castelli (WACT Silver) on a nice summer evening with three meeting records.

First, world champion Alison Dos Santos clocked 47.61 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles over European medalist Wilfried Happio’s 49.06. Then, Ernest John Obiena cleared 5.81 meters on his second attempt to win the pole vault (also trying 5.95) over Chris Nilsen’s 5.71 and Renaud Lavillenie and Jacob Wooten also on 5.71 but in a tie for third.
The men´s 400 meters saw a great battle in which world record holder Wayde Van Niekerk won in 44.33 seconds (his fastest time since 2017) over legendary Kirani James 44.38, his third fastest of the year.
There was another reverse of order after Zagreb, as Joe Kovacs with a 22.19 meter heave beat Ryan Crouser (22.00), with Armin Sinancevic third in 21.27. Marie-Josee Talou posted a nice 100 meters win in 10.86 seconds (+0.1w) ahead of Darryll Neita on 11.00 and Egyptian Bassant Hemida clocking 11.07, with Shericka Jackson only fifth timed in 11.19.
Another tired champion was Mujinga Kambundji in the 200 meters, finishing fourth in 22.88. Ahead of her was Beatrice Masilingi, 22.51, followed by Hemida, 22.59, and Neita, 22.61.
Jamal Britt won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.18 seconds (+0.1w) ahead of Damion Thomas 13.38 and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn in 12.72 (0.0w) ahead of Nia Ali’s 12.80. Brendon Carnes in the outside lane surprised his rivals in the 100 meters with a close 10.04 (-0.1w) win over Ferdinand Omanyala (who came from Zagreb) 10.05, Kendal Williams, 10.05, and Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake, 10.09.
Czech Lada Vondrova won the 400 meters in 51.60; Jamaican Natoya Goule won the 800 meters in 1:59.05 over Slovenian Anita Horvat (2:00.76). Dominic Lobalu from South Sudan topped the 3000 meters in 7:38.16 in the finish with Michael Temoi (7:38.50).
High jump world champion Eleanor Patterson cleared 1.91 at the first attempt, deciding her win over Elena Vallortigara who did the same on the second try, but both could not clear 1.94.
