KINGSTON, Jamaica – Nickel Ashmeade and Veronica Campbell-Brown were crowned 100m champions, but it was Kaliese Spencer whose world-leading time highlighted day two of the 2014 JAAA Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships.
Spencer, who separated herself from the field very early and widened the lead into the homestretch, won in 53.41secs ahead of training partner and World Junior champion Janieve Russell, who got a personal best of 54.75. Nikita Tracey took third in 55.18
Spencer, who gave credit to her coach Stephen Francis, said “I am very happy because this is the fastest I ever ran in Jamaica.”
Roxroy Cato won the men’s event in a personal best 48.48secs ahead of Annsert Whyte, who led into the straightaway, 48.58 and Leford Green, who was unable to stay close to the top two, 49.00.
Meanwhile, Campbell-Brown, who missed last year’s trials because of a provisionally drugs ban, which was later overturned, topped the women’s 100m in 10.96 into a negative 0.4m/s wind.
Kerron Stewart, who matched her strides for strides unto 90m, faded into second, 11.02 and Schillonie Calvert finished very strong for third in 11.15.
"I am happy with the victory but I know I still have a lot of work to do," Campbell-Brown, who looking towards Commonwealth Games.
In the men’s event, Ashmeade secured victory in 10.06 ahead of Jason Livermore 10.11 and Kemar Bailey-Cole 10.16. Nesta Carter and Andrew Fisher did not start in the final.
Kellion Knibb won the women’s discus with a mark of 58.88m to beat Daniel Thomas 55.02 and Tarasue Barnett 51.56.
Jovanee Jarrett, who leapt 6.38m on her first attempt, topped the women’s long jump ahead of Chanice Porter 6.25m and Claudette Allen 6.09m.
Sharlene Nickle won the women’s 1500m in 4:30.80, Demarley Johnson the men’s 5,000m in 16:08.64 and Lenford Adams the men’s 1500m in 4:00.51
