The Rabat Diamond League meet ended on June 5 with a superb home win and a world lead as Soufiane El Bakkali achieved a 7:58.28 meet record in the steeplechase.

There were two other meet records for the 25,000 spectators in the competition, which returned for the first time since 2019.

Another star guest Elaine Thompson-Herah delivered an expected win in a 10.83 meet record. An unfortunate hamstring tear for Karsten Warholm stopped him even before he finished the first 100 meters.

Men Rabat Diamond League

200 meters: American Kenneth Bednarek won with 20.21 seconds, followed by South African Luxolo Adams with 20.35 and Italian Eseosa Desalu, who clocked 20.54. Co-favorite Jerome Blake cramped, but managed to finish in 20.74.

800 meters: 17-year-old Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi took his third victory in a row after Nairobi and Ostrava with 1:45.47. Nijel Amos finished second with 1:45.66; Frenchman Gabriel Tual was third in 1:45.72.

1500 meters: In a 1-2 to the UK, Jake Wightman clocked the second-fastest time in the 1500 this year to win the race. Another Briton, Jake Heyward, was second with 3:33.54, while local Abdellatif Sadiki was third with 3:33.93.

400-meters hurdles: Kallifah Rosser (USA) ran 48.25 seconds and clocked a new meeting record. Olympic champion Karsten Warholm did not finish the race due a right hamstring tear.

Steeple: Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali took the home victory and clocked a new world-leading time of 7:58.28. Ethiopians Lamecha Girma (7:59.24) and Hailemariyam Tegegn (8:06.29 personal best) finished second and third, respectively. In There was a national record for India Sable (8:12.48, fifth).

Long Jump: Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou won with an 8.27-meter leap. Swiss world leader Simon Ehammer was second with 8.13 meters while the Olympic bronze medalist from Cuba, Maykel Massó, jumped 8.08 meters for third place.

Discus: World leader Kristjan Ceh won with a last throw of 69.68 meters, but also had a 69+ throw previously. Olympic champion Daniel Ståhl was second with 67.16, while Aussie Matthew Denny threw a personal best of 67.07.

Women at Rabat Diamond League

100 meters: Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah clocked a new meeting record of 10.83 seconds ahead of Marie-Josée Ta Lou (11.04) and Jamaican Natasha Morrison (11.22).

400 meters: Olympic silver medalist and top favorite, Marileidy Paulino, was the winner in 50.10 seconds, ahead of Barbadian Sada Williams with 50.74, and Jamaican Stephenie Ann McPherson with 51.37.

800 meters: Kenyan Mary Moraa took the victory in women’s 800 meters with a 1:58.93 personal best, ahead of South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso with 1:59.23 and French Renelle Lamote (1:59.83).

1500 meters: Ethiopians finished 1-2-3 in the women’s 1500 meters. Hirut Meshesha (3:57.30 PB); Freweyni Hailu (3:58.18) and Axumawit Embaye (3:58.80PB). There was also a personal best for fourth-placed Griffith from Australia (4:00.16).

3000 meters: Kenyan Mercy Cherono won with 8:40.29, while Briton Amy-Eloise Markovc was second with her personal best of 8:40.32. Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa, still under-18, finished third with an 8:41.42 personal best.

High Jump: World indoor champion, Ukrainian Yaroslava Mahuchikh cleared 1.96 meters and then tried a 2.01 world lead. Iryna Gerashcenko was second with 1.93 and Aussie Nicola Olyslagers third with the same mark.

Pole Vault: Sandi Morris cleared 4.65 meters in men’s pole vault to beat Aussie Nina Kennedy, who had the same mark but more failures. Kennedy did not continue but Morris tried for a 4.80 world lead.

Triple Jump: In a close battle, Thea Lafond, from Dominica, jumped 14.46 meters to win for the first time for her country in the history of the Diamond League. World medalist Shanieka Ricketts was second with 14.43 meters; Slovenian Neja Filipic jumped her personal best of 14.42 meters, also a European lead for 2022.
