Holmwood Tech’s Obrian Frith accounted for the only record on day two of Champs 2014. Frith ran a well-measured Boys’ Open 2,000m steeplechase in 5:59.70 to take gold.

Frith, who ran neck and neck with St. Jago’s Lerone Haye up to the last 200 metres, only separated himself in the final stretch. He is the first to run the event under six minutes at Champs. The previous record was 6:00.12 set by Kingston College’s Sanj D. Powell in 2013.

Haye held on for second in 6:03.41 while the bronze went to Winston Freeman of Bellefield in 6:04.58.

In the girls’ event, Shanieke Watson of Holmwood took top honours in 7:17.41 ahead of Hydel’s Monifa Green 7:33.73 and Vere’s Alithia Ferron 7:38.49.

In the day’s other girls’ finals, Janell Fullerton (Edwin Allen) won the Class 2 Shot Put final with 15.02m over Georgetta Samuels (Holmwood) 14.55m while Shadae Lawrence (Hydel) took the Class 1 discus with 48.06m over Rochelle Frazer (Edwin Allen) 47.50m.

On the boys side, Michane Ricketts (Edwin Allen) did 7.52m to beat Gavin Gibson (KC) 7.37m and Obrien Wasome (JC) 7.27m in the Class 1 long jump while Shammawi Wellington was the only one over seven metres, his mark 7.16m, to win the Class 2 long jump final.

Meanwhile, all the big names, Calabar’s pair of Michael O’Hara 21.40 and Javon Francis 21.59, KC’s Zharnel Hughes 21.20 and Jevaughn Minzie of Bog Walk 21.51 easily booked semi-final spots in the Class 1 boys 200m.

Also, Christopher Taylor with 22.54, was easy to advance in Class 3, so took were KC’s pair of Jhaughn Matherson 21.82 and Akeem Bloomfield 21.64 in Class 2.

On the girls’ side, Edwin Allen’s Shellece Clark 24.86 and Aaliyah Hopkins 24.39, St. Jago’s Kimone Shaw 25.16 and Sashell Frater 24.87.

Saqukine Cameron and Monique Spencer, both of Edwin Allen, with 24.23 and 23.96 respectively, Jonielle Smith of Wolmer’s 24.19, Asaine Hall of Petersfield 23.97 and Holmwood’s Chanice Bonner 24.58 are in the next round of the Girls’ Class 1 200m.

Things went according to the books in the sprint relays, except for Wolmer’s mishap in the girls Class 1 event. They did not finish.
