Kevin Nedrick of Petersfield set a new national junior record on the opening day of the 2017 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Nedrick, who is one of Trackalerts.com’s “five boys to watch,” threw the javelin 63.73 metres to break the old National junior mark of 63.69, set back in 2014 by Orlando Thomas formerly of KC.
The Champs record of 64.08m, set by Devon Spencer of STETHS in 2014, however, survived at least for a few days. Spencer was a senior at the time he got the record.
The final of the event is set for 1:30pm on Saturday’s final day.
Britany Anderson of Vere, in the Class 2 girls’ 100m hurdles, was the first to strike. Anderson, who could be the first athlete to run sub-13, shot out of the blocks and dominated the race to ease down across the line in 13.37 seconds.
The mark erased the old record of 13.38 set in 2013 by Peta-Gaye Williams, who was representing Camperdown at the time.
However, Anderson’s record lasted for less than three minutes, as Holmwood’s Shanette Allison dominated heat 2 to win in 13.30 seconds.
Along with the two record breakers, Daszay Freeman of Manchester, who won heat 3 in 13.51, will possibly set up Champs best final.
Later in the evening, Kimar Farquharson of Calabar broke the Class 2 boys’ 800m record with 1:51.26. He beat Aldwyn Sappleton’s 1997 mark of 1:52.27.
