Jamaica’s high jump record holder Germaine Mason was involved in a fatal motorcycle crash. Mason, who set a Jamaican record of 2.34m to win the Pan American Games gold in 2003, crashed along Palisadoes main road in Kingston this morning (20 April).

Jamaica Constabulary‏ Force (JCF) confirmed “Germaine Mason, 34, Jamaican-born athlete and former national high jumper, died in a motorcycle crash this morning.”

Mason’s former Club, MVP headed by Stephen Francis, also tweeted: “Devastated by news of the death of @GermaineMasonHJ 2008 Beijing Olympics Silver Medal winner High Jump 2.34m. Jamaican record holder. RIP.”

Olympian Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn also commented: “Germaine Mason gone too soon. Condolences to his family and friends.”

He won silver and bronze medals at the World Junior Championships in 2000 and 2002 respectively, the latter event held in his hometown of Kingston.

Mason, in 2006, switched allegiance to Great Britain and went on to win silver in the high jump at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The former Wolmer’s student, in 2004, cleared 2.25m to win bronze at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
