James & Mu Win One-Lappers in Puerto Rico

Kirani James and Athing Mu won the 400-meter finals at the Puerto Rico International Athletics Classic, a part of the Puma American Track League.

Mu, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games 800-meter champion, made light work of the one-lap event, toying with the field for up to 300 meters before pulling away for a big win in a season-best 50.42 seconds. American Gabby Scott held off Jamaican Junelle Bromfield, 51.42 to 51.82.

MU wasn’t happy with her 51.7 a couple of weeks ago, “so I just want to come out here in PR (Puerto Rico) and see what happens,” she said.

James also had a comfortable race, staying with the pack on the backstretch and bouncing off the curve to open up a lead down the stretch and cross the line in a season-best 44.70 seconds. Jamaican Sean Bailey, the younger brother of Veronica Campbell-Brown, finished fast to take second in 45.52.

“I am very happy to be here,” James said, “This was my second 400 meters, so I am trying to build on that. My next meet is going to be at Pre, which is always going to be good, always going to be hot, so I am just trying to get ready for that.”
