NEW YORK, USA – Jamaican Sophia Smellie beat Mary Cain in her indoor season opener at Gotham Cup meet in the Armory on Friday.
Cain, in her first indoor 500m race, clocked 1:12.43 second place behind Smellie in 1:11.63, but returned half hour later to win the 800m in 2:08.51.
Ajee Wilson clocked 2:50.44 in the 1000m. In the men 300m, fast 33.30secs for Jamaicans Akheem Gauntlett and Jermaine Brown.
Israeli Donald Sanford clocked 47.47 in the 400m. Tom Hopkins got 1:02.57 in the 500m.
Meanwhile, in Birmingham, Olympic relay champion and World record holder Tianna Bartoletta opened at Blazer Invite with 7.30 in the 60m, Nigerian Gloria Asumnu posted 7.34 in another race.
St. Vincent´s Kineke Alexander got 37.82 in the 300m, a new national indoor record. Chanelle Price won the 1000m in 2:40.03. Antwan Wright clocked fastest in the 60m prelims with 6.65, PB. James Harris cleared 2.23m in the high jump. Last year NCAA Indoor Champion Eddie Lovett from Virgin Islands opened with 7.82 at 60m hurdles.
