Jamaicans Kimar Farquharson and Rushana Dwyer enjoyed mixed results on Friday (13 Jan) at the TTU Corky Classic, held at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, TX.
Kimar Farquharson of South Plains, who clocked in at 1:09.35, finished second and narrowly missed his best of 1:09.33 in the men’s 600 yards. Farquharson had a strong start with a split time of 43.40 seconds in the first two laps but could not close the gap on Nathaniel Ezekiel of Baylor. Nevertheless, his time of 1:09.35 was still impressive, and he secured a well-deserved second place.
Ezekiel took first place with a time of 1:08.75. This young sophomore set the pace early on with a split time of 42.28 seconds in the first two laps. He maintained his lead and crossed the finish line with a final time of 1:08.75, leaving the competition in his wake.
Third place went to Caio Almeida of South Plains, who finished with a time of 1:09.75. Almeida had a strong start with a split time of 41.92 seconds after lap 2, and he maintained that pace to cross the finish line in third place.
Rounding out the top four was Bailey Smotek of Tarleton State, who clocked in at 1:10.32. Smotek had a solid start with a split time of 42.71 seconds after two laps but could not maintain that pace, finishing in fourth place.
In the women’s 600 yards, former Edwin Allen athlete Rushana Dwyer, now at South Plains, finished 8th in 1:25.42.
Topping the field was Lily Williams of Baylor, who took first place with a time of 1:20.21. Williams set the pace early on with a split time of 48.30 seconds in the first two laps. She maintained her lead to cross the finish line with a final time of 1:20.21, leaving the competition behind her.
In second place was Calisha Taylor of New Mexico JC, who clocked in at 1:21.65.
Third place went to Loubna Benhadja of UTEP, who finished with a time of 1:22.39.
