SZEKESFEHERVAR (HUN): World record holder Sydney McLaughlin, most probably in her last race of the season at 400-meter hurdles, is one of the many highlights of Monday´s 12th edition of Istvan Gyulai Memorial (WACT Gold, 9 individual Eugene winners competing).
For a country that is preparing for World Championships next year, this is a very important event and the sold-out stadium is confirmation of that. Mondo Duplantis is another stand-out name in current world of athletics; Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce comes from a fast 100 meters on Saturday and should run in far warmer conditions than in Poland.
Fast Under-20 sprinter Tamari Davis comes too, and Shericka Jackson returns in the 200 meters as are Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and Keni Harrison in the 100-meter hurdles. It will be nteresting to see Skolimowska surprise 1500 winner Diribe Welteji in the 800 meters.
In the men´s 100 meters, chances for revenge after Saturday pit Trayvon Bromell, Marvin Bracy, Ackeem Blake and Christian Coleman (top 4) against each other again. Grant Holloway is in the 110-meter hurdles against fresh Commonwealth winner Rasheed Broadbell.
World Under-20 record holder Erriyon Knighton meets Kenny Bednarek in the 200 meters. Hurdles champion Alison dos Santos will try it the flat 400 meters.
In technical events, there will be plenty of top clashes. Gianmarco Tamberi in high jump against Andriy Protsenko, Joe Kovacs and Tom Walsh in the shot, with Josh Awotunde against in-shape Tomas Stanek. In discus, it is Kristjan Ceh vs 70-meters Swedish duo on Saturday Simon Pettersson and Daniel Stahl.
As is Hungarian tradition, a hammer throw is on the schedule, with Polish star duo Pawel Fajdek and Wojciech Nowicki, Eivind Henriksen and local hero Bence Halasz. On the women’s side, World medalists Brooke Andersen and Janee Kassanavoid will compete.
In remaining events, Kenyans Collins Kipruto and Nicholas Kebenei are 800 meters favorites, as is Serbian Milica Gardasevic in the long jump and Greek Elina Tzenggo in the javelin. In every event, top Hungarian athletes are getting their chance as last preparation before European championships.
