Two World Championships qualifying times, three meet records and two sub-1:49 clockings in the men’s 800m, highlighted Friday’s opening day of the two-day NCB Intercol Track and Field Championships at the National Stadium.
Jamaica’s Rio Olympics relay silver medallist, Sashalee Forbes and Everton Clarke, both of GC Foster College, were the athletes to register 100m World Championships qualifying times.
Clarke, who battled with UTech’s Roland Levy down to the wire, prevailed in the men’s 100m final – 10.12secs. Levy, 10.17secs and Oshane Bailey, also of GC Foster College, 10.24, were second and third respectively.
Forbes, in the women’s event, dominated from start to finish to cross the line in 11.23 ahead of Shanice Reid of UTech, 11.60secs and Shanta Deer, also of GC Foster College, 11.75secs.
GC Foster College’s Marzel Miller put together a fairly good race to take the men’s 400m hurdles in 52.06 to beat his teammate Kemario Eldemire, 52.61.
In the women’s one lap obstacle race, World Junior silver medallist, Shannon Kalawan, now at UTech, raced against the clock to take the top spot in 57.02, a season best. Candice McLeod of UWI finished second in 58.43.
In a very exciting finish, Daniel Glave of GC Foster College took the men’s 800m in 1:48.74 ahead of Chadoye Dawson of Knox 1:48.93 as both celebrated wildly in their moment of joy of breaking 1:50.
Samantha James of Mico led from the start and held off the fast finishing Junelle Bromfield of UTech, 2:08.41 to 2:08.97 in the women’s 800m. Bromfield, less than two hours prior, had run 52.23, the fastest time of the 400m heats.
In the field, Venique Harris of UWI threw 57.12m for a new discus record. Isheka Binns of UWI, who earlier threw 56.47m for the then record, finished second.
Bahamian Tamara Myers, representing UWI, leapt 6.42m to wipe Kimberly Stevens’ old mark of 6.36m off the books. Jessica Noble of UTech 6.28m and Cheneka Jones of GC Foster College 5.79m were the other medal winners.
Olivia Leckford of GC Foster College took the top spot in the women’s javelin with a record throw of 52.68m. Binns, who watched as her old mark of 46.60m was taken down, finished second with 42.96m while third went to Jada Thompson of Shortwood 39.80m.
David Hall of GC Foster College cleared 2.05m to beat Leroy Page of UWI, 1.95m and Ryan Brown of GC Foster College, also 1.95m, for the men’s high jump title.
Demar Gayle of GC Foster College put the shot the furthest, 17.18 metres to beat Alec-Vernon Longmore of UTech 16.57m.
Aubrey Allen’s 15.88m enabled him to take victory in the men’s triple jump. He beat his GC Foster College’s teammate Shawn D Thompson, 15.46m into second place.
At the end of the first day, GC Foster College led both sections. The female team has so far scored 72 points to lead UTech 65, UWI 60, Mico 21 and Church 14 while the male team ended the day on 103.5 points, well ahead of UTech 55, UWI 42.5, Knox 20 and Excelsior Community College 16.
