The championships will be a pre-Olympic meeting for several star athletes in Europe, with competitors from Great Britain, France, Germany, Romania, Sweden, Portugal, Norway, the Netherlands, Italy, Bulgaria, Finland and Ukraine – among others – competing for top honours.

Star athletes such as Dafne Schippers, Christine Ohuruogu, Martyn Rooney, Sandra Perkovic, Nadine Muller, Anita Wlodarczyk and Greg Rutherford, are just a few of the top names that will be on display over the next five days of competition.

Several athletes are using European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam to prepare for the upcoming Olympic Games at Rio 2016 next month.

Schippers, one of the athletes heavily favoured to win the women’s sprint double, is scheduled to race in the 100m and 4x100m relay, although the Dutch World Championships 200m champion from 2015, and she is hoping to win the sprint short event.

“I need the Europeans as a first step to go to the Olympics,” said Schippers.

“The 100m is going well, my start is getting better and better, and I hope to race well in the European Championships and win the 100m title.

“I’ll have lots of family and friends out supporting me. I’m very happy to be the face of the European Championships.”

Meanwhile, notable absentees from the meet include Great Britain distance runner Mo Farah, the Olympic 10,000m and 5000m champion from London 2012, and countrywoman and Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill.
