BATON ROUGE, La. – Coming off a victory in the 110m hurdles at the Texas Relays, Damion Thomas of has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week the conference office announced on Tuesday (3 April).

A native of Sunrise, Fla., Thomas registered the fastest qualifying time in the event in the prelims with a smooth time of 13.68 on Friday night. The freshman returned to the track on Saturday for the finals and won the title with a wind-aided 13.43; he beat out over 60 other athletes for the gold medal. The 13.43 mark is the second fastest all-conditions time in the world for 2018 and it ranks as the fastest time in the NCAA this year.

Thomas has won both of his 110 meter hurdle races this season; the hurdler registered a time of 13.79 to claim the top spot at the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge in Tempe, Ariz., in late March. Thomas and the rest of the LSU track and field team will compete at their first home meet of the 2018 outdoor season on Saturday. The Battle on the Bayou will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
