KINGSTON, Jamaica — World-leader Fedrick Dacres had to settle for second place in the men’s Discus at the Jamaica Trials on Saturday, but the national record holder won’t be too bothered by the result.
Beating Dacres on the day was his fellow Reckless Control clubmate and training partner Traves Smikle, who recorded a winning throw of 64.50m in the sixth and final round of the competition.
Dacres registered 63.49m in the third round, but fouled on two of his last three throws to settle for the runner-up spot.
The result will not be too much of a bother for the 25-year-old, who leads the world with an impressive 70.78m, done at the Rabat Diamond League, Morocco on June 16.
Both Dacres and Smikle have already achieved that world championships standard of 65.00m.
Chad Dimitri Wright was third with 60.66m.
EASY WIN FOR THOMAS-DODD
As expected, national record holder Danniel Thomas-Dodd comfortably won the women’s Shot Put with a mark of 18.52m.
Thomas-Dodd, the 2018 World Indoor silver medallist, owns the third best throw this year with a personal best and national record mark of 19.48m.
Finishing second in the event was Lloydricia Cameron with a mark of 16.89m and third went to Nayoka Clunis with a 16.34m effort.
The IAAF World Championships qualifying standard for the women’s Shot Put is 18.00m.
LAWRENCE SECURES DISCUS CROWN
Another national record holder, Shadae Lawrence also punched her ticket to the Doha, World Championships later this year after winning the women’s discus throw final with a throw of 61.14m.
The NCAA third-place finisher this year in Austin, Texas, was going beyond the 61m barrier for the fourth time this season.
Shanice Love, who also has the world championships entry standard, got second with a mark of 59.05m, while Samantha Hall had a season-best effort of 57.25m for third.
Love owns a personal best of 62.69m, set this season at the NCAA championships in Texas.
She also has four throws that sit at 61.04m or further this season.
Inform Tajay Gayle won the men’s long jump with a leap of 8.24m.
Gayle had three other jumps (8.14m, 8.02m and 8.12m) over the eight metre mark.
The senior championships is being used to select Jamaica’s team to the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar from September 28 to October 6, as well as the Pan Am Games in Peru from August 6-11.
