As expected, Jamaica College (JC) outscored Kingston College (KC) in the 400m and 800m finals to take the lead on Saturday’s (15 May) final day of Champs 2021.
JC won two of the three 400m finals and one 800m. Overall, JC picked up 68 points to KC’s 38.
Javier Brown won the Class 1 girls’ 400m final in a personal best 45.75 ahead of Jeremy Bembridge of Calabar, 45.94. Brown’s teammate Revon Williams finished 5th in 46.89 for 13 points for JC.
Brown had set a new record of 49.86 in the 400m hurdles on Friday evening.
Mark Anthony Miller took gold in 47.35 and Jaiden Reid’s 49.19 for 6th combined for 12 points for JC in Class 2 400m.
KC’s Jordan Taylor topped Class 3 in 50.17 while his teammate Shavaughn Brown finished 3rd in 50.94. Zachary Wallace of Maggotty finished second in 50.33.
On the girls’ side, title contenders Edwin Allen and St. Jago ended medalless.
Aalliyah Francis of Rusea’s won Class 1 in 52.51 ahead of Garriel White of Hydel, 52.77. The Class 2 title went to Dejanea Oakley of Clarendon in 52.51 ahead of Oneika McAnnuff of Hydel, 52.54.
Ferncourt High’s Abigail Campbell ram 54.86 to take the top spot in the Class 3 girls’ 400m final.
In the 800m, which saw Edwin Allen’s Chevonne Hall left his mark on Champs 2021 with 1:48.58, a record run to take the Class 1 boys’ final. Hall, who led at the bell with 50.5, was overtaken on the backstretch by Rivaldo Marshall. Hall stormed back in the home stretch and had time to ease down across the line with his hands wide apart.
JC picked up 1-2 in Class 2 with Kemarrio Bygrave, 1:52.00 and Khandale Frue, who finished strong in 1:53.46.
Tyrone Lawson, 2:00.58 and Rasheed Pryce, 2:00.76, finished 3rd and 4th for JC in the Class 3 boys’ 800m final, won by STETHS’ Rashid Green, 1:59.24.
After the Class 2 boys’ 800m final, JC lead with 236.5 points ahead of KC, 218 and Calabar, 169.
St. Jago stepped up big time and outclassed Edwin Allen in the Class 1 girls’ 800m. Alesia Douglas, 2:10.54 and Sancia Smith, 2:10.58, gave the Monk Street School 1-2 for 16 valuable points.
Edwin Allen won Class 2 with Rickeisha Simms, 2:08.76, and La Tanya Johnson of Vere took Class 3 in 2:12.52.
At the end of the 400m/800m finals, Edwin Allen continued to lead with 236 ahead of St. Jago, 211.5 and Hydel 183.5.
