Day one of the Jamaica Administrative Athletics Association (JAAA) Carifta Games Trials came and went just as swiftly as the times the youngsters laid down on Saturday 8 March at the National Stadium in Kingston (Click for Day One Results).
Raheem Chambers and Kimone Shaw, both of St Jago stole the show. Chambers displayed a blistering 10.28 seconds in 0.09 wind; Akeem Bloomfield and Chad Walker posted 10.42 and 10.45 respectively for the under-18 segments.
Shaw posted a hasty 11.55, while Shanice Reid 11.72 and Kiara Grant 11.84, had second and third places for the girls under 18.
The under-20 boys saw good showing from Jevaughn Minzie 10.40 Raheem Robinson 10.48 and Jordan Chin came in with 10.49 on a 0.2 m/s wind reading. Jonielle Smith with a late burst topped the girls under 20 100m in 11.44 seconds, just ahead of Diana Johnson and Kedisha Dallas, both 11.47.

The hurdles also showed some excitement; leading the way was under-18 boy Jaheel Hyde stopping the clock at 51.06s; second was Duran Crooks 53.21 an Orlando Smith third with 54.22. Okeen Williams 51.79 won the under-20 Marvin Williams was followed by Davian Baker both posting 51.84 and 53.59 respectively. The girls under-19 was won by Andrenette Knight then came Kimone Green in 59.11 and a fast finishing Leith Genekee with 59.13. The Girls’ 300m Hurdles was captured by Shenice Cohen with a time of 41.40. Shannon Kalawan got 41.63 and Patrice Moody 42.70.
In the 800 meters run for under-20 boys, Rajay Hamilton came from nowhere to win in 1:51.90. Second was Kevon Robinson’s 1:51.97 then Miguel Morrison in 1:52.55. Ryan Butler came good in a time of 1:53.74 for the boys’ under-18 with Ryan Dunkley at 1:54.04 along with Paul Tate 1:55.74 finishing second and third respectively. The Girls’under-20 saw Monique McPherson coming home in 2:09.07 then coming in second was Chantai Smith at 2:10.28. Sasha Gaye Whyte’s 2:12.09. The younger girls represented with Junelle Bromfield 2:10.10 for first after was Britnie Dixon’s 2:13.52 then Chrissani May 2:14.27.
The 3000m run for boys under 18 saw Jauvaney James finishing first 8:56.97. Second was Garfield Gordon of Mavis Bank High 8:58.49 followed up by Shane Buchanan in third place at 9:00.64. The boys’ under-20 5000m was won by Obrien Frith with 15:26.60 second going to Romario Foote and 3rd Thaleeto Green 16:03.89. Under 20 Girls 3000m was taken by Shanieke Watson 10:22.70 next up was Alethia McLaughlin 10:39.46 coming in also was Alvina Howell 10:54.44.
The field events saw some favorable results. The boys’ under 18 Shot Put was won by Vashon McCarthy 18.05m. It was a good win and he will be missed at Champs this year due to academic related matters. Warren Barrett took up second spot with a throw of 17.90m. Edwin Allen’s under 18 Discus Throw-girl, Janel Fullerton got first place with 43.75m. Second was Hydel High’s Devia Brown with 40.63m.
Under 18 Boys High Jump went to Lusahane Wilson with 1.95m while second was John-Micheal Davis 1.90m. Long Jump Under 18 Girls went to Collista Baker 5.73m -0.3 wind second in was Chris-Ann Bryan at 5.63m 3.0 wind.
The Javelin Throw boys under 20 was awarded to Orlando Thomas 57.83m, followed up by Zaavan Richards with 57.65m. The girls under 18 Javelin was won with a throw of 31.38m by Sahjay Stevens. The girls under 20 saw Olivia Leckford winning with 43.64m. Second was Isheka Binns with 41.72m.
Sunday will see action in the 200 and 400m dash. Martin Manley, Jevaughn Minzie, Kimone Shaw, Jonielle Smith among others should put on a good show.
