Michael Clarke, head coach of defending boys’ Champs winners, said they are rearing and ready to go.
“We are honestly waiting for the event to start,” he said of Champs set to start on Tuesday, March 15 and ends on Saturday, March 19 at the National Stadium.
Asked how are the boys looking forward to the event, Clarke said, “they are quite excited and anticipating the performances and a highly competitive five days ahead.”
Calabar has won the last four Champs titles, and the question of whether they are uncomfortable chasing the 5th, coach Clarke had this to say. “No, every year is a different year, every year is a different team, so they are not complacent as is a done deal, you know they have to go out there and defend and they have been prepared for that."
The Champs Preview Magazine have Calabar to get 292 points, 34 more than Kingston College (KC) 258, Jamaica College (JC) 229 and St. Jago 188.
Tyreke Wilson, the fastest Class 2 sprinter, will miss his individual events – 100m and 200m, but Calabar are expected to secure maximum points in both sprints. They are also expected to score heavily in the Class 2 400m, Class 2 110m hurdles, and Class 3 1500m.
Wilson, according to the coach, picked up a cramp at the Gibson McCook Relays last month and the decision about how to use him was taken by the team.
“He will not be running in the flat event, but he is pending in the 4x100m,” explained Clarke, a member of the national coaching staff.
He said they are no other injury worries for the team. Asked if everything is in order for the next five days, Clarke replied, “So we think.”
