GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Sprinter Remona Burchell ran the second-fastest 100-meter time in the world this year and Alex Amankwah won the men’s 800 meters title to lead an outstanding day by Alabama athletes, who won one individual event and produced four performances that rank on the all-time school top-10 list in four events on Friday at the Pepsi Florida Relays on the campus of the University of Florida.
Amankwah posted a new personal best of 1 minute, 45.91 seconds in the men’s 900 meters to win the prestigious event ahead of excellent competition while setting a meet record with the No. 3 performance in all-time Alabama history. Burchell was the top collegian and second finisher overall in a world-class field in the women’s 100, opening her 2015 outdoor season in impressive fashion with a wind-legal time of 11.04 seconds into a headwind of 2.5 meters per second. That performance ranks second on the all-time Crimson Tide list behind only her 11.03 performance in 2014.
“Today was an outstanding day for the Alabama track & field program – a red-letter day in our history,” said Alabama head coach Dan Waters. “This is a big-time meet with world-class competition and to have event winners and PRs to the extent that we did today makes a statement about our program. This shows we are in perfect position for us at this point of the season. Our top athletes came out and produced top performances on a big stage. I’m very pleased for them and proud of them.”
Four athletes produced Alabama Top 10 performances on Friday: Burchell (women’s 60 – 2nd); Amankwah (men’s 800 – 3rd); Dominique Kimpel with a 23.55 clocking in the women’s 200 meters (8th in Alabama history); and Alex Gholston with a 53.76 outing in the women’s 400 (8th all-time). All four performances marked personal career bests for those athletes, as well.
