The Games of the XXXII Olympiad, Tokyo 2020 could be postponed, according to reports out of Japan.

On Tuesday, Japan’s Olympic minister Seiko Hashimoto, update parliament about the possibilities of the games later in the year.

According to a BBC report, Hashimoto said Tokyo’s contract with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) “calls for the Games to be held within 2020”.

The event is set for 24 Jul 2020 – 9 Aug 2020.

Concerns over the impact of the coronavirus outbreak will be high on the agenda at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board meeting later this week.

“The IOC has the right to cancel the games only if they are not held during 2020,” Hashimoto told the Diet. “This can be interpreted to mean the games can be postponed as long as they are held during the calendar year.”
