BEIJING, China – Grenada’s Kirani James won bronze in the 400 metres final at the 15th World Championships here on Wednesday.

Wayde van Niekerk of South African ran a blistering 200 metres and although James and second placed LaShawn Merritt of the United States of America fought hard and closed the distance, he was good enough to hold on for victory.

An Niekerk won in 43.48 seconds with Meritt doing 43.65 and James 43.78 as Luguelin Santos Dominica finishing fourth in 44.11 while Machel Cedenio of Trinidad and Tobago was seventh in 45.06.

“I can say this was one of the toughest races in my life,” said James after the final.

“With these guys running such times, the world record could also be in threat. I think the level of our event is increasing so much,” he added.

“I just wanted to go out there and do everything to make my country proud of me,” he added.
