JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Usain Bolt tipped Wayde van Niekerk to break the world 400m record at the 2016 Olympics after they trained together in the build-up to the Games, informed the Independent Online.
“When he came to Jamaica we all trained together, I was saying to my coach (Glen Mills) in a matter of time, if he is ready, he can break the world record with ease,” said Bolt, the 100m and 200m record holder at 9.58 and 19.19.
van Niekerk, who ran out of lane eight in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games 400m final, crossed the line in a record 43.03 seconds.
Bolt continued: “He (Mills) agreed with me, so when it happened it wasn’t a surprise, it is the fact that he almost ran 42 that I was surprised about. That was just brilliant, he is an awesome athlete.”
Bolt is in South Africa for the Puma School of Speed athletics events. On Monday (January 29) in Johannesburg he electrified the stadium as he strutted his stuff on the track, posed for selfies and charmed fans in the stands.
