Asafa Powell ran a world leading time at today’s (12 Feb) Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston.

Powell, who separated himself from the field at the half way stage, stopped the University of Houston clock in 6.49secs to be the fastest from the three semi-final heats.

Powell’s time beat American Mike Rodgers’ previous world leading mark of 6.52 done a week ago.

The sub-10 king described the run as “nice”.

“Not a bad run for my first race and world lead,” said Powell.

Powell, who didn't run the final, had earlier run 6.50 in the prelims. St. Kitts and Nevis’ Antoine Adams won the final in 6.58 ahead of compatriot Chevaughn Walsh 6.64.

Two other Jamaicans Natasha Morrison 7.15 and Kerron Stewart 7.22 recorded the fastest times in the semi-finals. They too didn't take part in the final. Morrison did 7.22 and Stewart 7.28 in the heats.

Schillonie Calvert, the third Jamaican in the event, finished 4th in the final with 7.33. The event went to Tahesia Harrigan-Scott of BVI in 7.21.

Calvert did 7.32 in the heats and 7.30 in the semis.
