Look over your shoulder Usain Bolt: There's another upcoming Jamaican sprinter on the horizon.

Former STETHS sprinter Kemarley Brown, now representing Oakland Merritt College, shattered the national JC and community college record in the men’s 100 meters, running a 2014 world leading 9.93 seconds to repeat as California Community College Athletic Association champion Saturday evening at Mt. San Antonio College. Brown, from Jamaica, had a legal aiding wind of 1.8 meters per second (Video of race below).

The previous world best – and only other time under 10 seconds this year – was 9.98 by Simon Magakwe of South Africa on May 12. The former JC record was 10.05 by 2012 U.S. Olympic team “find” Ryan Bailey out of Rend Lake (Ill.) Community College on May 22, 2009.

Brown got out swiftly and ran away from the field on the fast Mt. SAC track – where on April 19 he had run 10.13 to win a Mt. SAC Relays race. “I love this place,” Brown said. Southern California champion Just’n Thymes of Riverside was the runner-up Saturday in 10.22.

Brown, 21, has previously run on national Junior teams for Jamaica but has battled injuries. “I’ve stopped getting injured,” he said. "I’ve been working on my strength and endurance.”

He has signed a letter of intent to run for TCU next season. “I came to the USA to get an education,” Brown said. “Junior college has been good for me.”

The time did not break the Mt. SAC stadium record of 9.86 by Ato Boldon of Trinidad, however. Four-time Olympic medalist Boldon was also a former (1993) California CC champion, for San Jose City College. The former CCCAA meet record was 10.17 by Josh Norman of Fresno City College in 2001.

Brown was a double winner, also taking the 200 meters in a wind-aided 20.29 ahead of defending champion Thymes – who had deprived Brown of winning both sprints at the 2013 championships.

Earlier in the meet, Brown had opened up a big lead on the second leg of the 4 x 100 meter relay. But Mt. SAC came on over the final two legs to take the victory in 40.22, the No. 3 JC/CC time in the country this season.
