Erriyon Knighton broke Usain Bolt’s world U20 record on Saturday’s (26 June) penultimate day of the US Olympic Trials in Eugene.

Knighton, who ran 20.11 to break Bolt’s World U18 record of 20.13 last month, was in sparkling form on Saturday in the men’s 200m semi-finals. The 17-year-old ran a blistering 19.88 seconds to erase Bolt’s 19.93 world junior record.

He signalled his intention in the first round with a then-personal best of 20.04 to beat world champion Noah Lyles, 20.19.

Kenny Bednarek, semi-final one winner in 19.90, Lyles, who again was beaten by Knighton, has the third-fastest time of 19.91.

Meanwhile, Grant Holloway ran a stunning 12.81, narrowly missing out on the men’s 110m hurdles world record by one-hundredth of a second.  

The mark, which came in the semi-finals, is a world lead, meet record. American Aries Merritt holds’ the world record of 12.80.

Later in the final, Holloway was slower but secured an easy win in 12.96. He is now the only sprint hurdler this season to break 13 seconds. Jamaican Omar McLeod had the previous world lead of 13.01.

Devon Allen ran a season-best 13.10 for second and, along with third-place finisher Daniel Roberts, 13.11, will also make the trip to Tokyo.

Gabby Thomas was also in sparkling form. She ran very well to get a world lead, meet record and personal best of 21.61 in the women’s 200m final.

Jenna Prandini followed her across the line in 21.89. Anavia Battle, the schoolgirl from Ohio State, 21.95 rounded off the top three finishers.

Allyson Felix, who made her fifth Olympic Games team in the 400m, finished fifth in a season-best 22.11.

American rising star Sha’Carri Richardson, who pulled out of the 200m, won the 100m in 10.86. She has a season-best of 10.72.

Rai Benjamin produced another impressive display on the day. He stamped his class on the men’s 400m hurdles, winning in a massive 46.83 for a world lead, meet record and personal best.

Kenny Salmon was a distant second in 48.08.

Sydney McLaughlin, 53.03, Shamier Little, 53.71 and Delilah Muhammad, 53.86, have booked their places in the women’s 400m hurdles final.

Former Olympic champion Brittney Reese had her first legal 7m jump this season – 7.13m for victory in the women’s long jump. Tara Davis will also be going to the Olympics with her 7.04m effort for second place.
