BOSTON, USA – Sprint-hurdler Nia Ali, who became a mother last summer, says she hopes her comeback will inspire other female athletes.
Ali, who was speaking at the pre-event press conference for the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, said: “I do hope more mother athletes (will be) doing well at the highest level is going to become the norm.”
Nia Ali, Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and American Allyson Felix were Doha 2019 gold medal mothers. Ali will line-up in the 60m hurdles.
Three Jamaicans, Janeek Brown, Brittaney Anderson and Jeanine Williams, along with American Lolo Jones, are down to contest the 60m hurdles.
Meanwhile, Jamaican Asafa Powell, who ran 98 sub-10 times, the most by any sprinter in the history of the sport, will face American 2016 world indoor champion Trayvon Bromell.
American Marvin Bracy, who has a personal best of 6.48, is due to make a comeback to the track. World 800m champion Donavan Brazier is on the entry-list for the 600m.
In the middle distance, Jake Wightman and Bruce Hoppel will face each other in the 1000m.
“I’m looking at it as doing an 800m and hanging on for 200m,” said Hoppel at the press conference.
“I have not set foot on an indoor track yet,” he reminded reporters.
“This will be the first one, so I’m hoping it’s fast.”
World 800m champion Donavan Brazier says he wants to enjoy himself more on the racing circuit this year.
“Last year I enjoyed the sport a lot more than the previous years, and I got better results, so I want to enjoy it more,” said the American ahead of his participation in the New Balance Indoor Games.
He is there due to compete in the 600m. Last year he clocked all-time best at this distance with 1:13.77.
Jesse Louiber Memorial men’s 400m race should see the first sub 46 of the season. Kahmari Montgomery, Vernon Norwood and Obi Igbokwe along with Costarican Nery Brenes are the top names to watch.
