EUGENE, Oregon – Jamaica’s Shanoya Douglas headlines a loaded women’s sprint field as the World Athletics U20 Championships open here, setting up another chapter in the long-running rivalry between Jamaica and the United States on the track.
Douglas is expected to challenge the Maxwell twins in both the 100m and 200m, with newly crowned European U18 champion Kelly Doualla of France also in the mix over the shorter distance.
The event carries history for Jamaica, whose past U20 winners include Nicole Mitchell in 1992, Veronica Campbell-Brown in 2000, and Tina Clayton, who swept the sprint titles in 2021 and 2022.
In the 400m, Poland’s Anastazja Kus takes on a deep American contingent, while Slovenia’s Ziva Remic is among the favourites in the 800m.
Ethiopia’s Haregeweyni Kalayu, already sub-four minutes for 1500m as a U18 athlete, enters as the runner to beat over that distance. Uganda’s Charity Cherop headlines both the 3,000m and 5,000m, while Ethiopia and Kenya renew their steeplechase rivalry.
South Africa’s Tumi Ramokgopa, the world U20 leader in the 400m hurdles, also features in the sprint hurdles alongside Spain’s Jil Sanchez and a strong U.S. contingent.
Australia’s Izobelle Louison-Roe leads the high jump, and Czech vaulter Nicole Krutilova tops the pole vault field. The long jump looms as one of the tightest contests of the championships, with several athletes carrying personal bests between 6.40m and 6.49m.
In the throws, Nigeria’s Jessia Oji leads the world U20 shot put rankings, while American Jaslene Massey tops the discus standings.
