Jamaica came close to the podium on multiple occasions but left Hampden Park empty-handed on a difficult night of athletics finals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Lamara Distin entered the competition as one of the favorites for a medal. She cleared 1.87 meters but could not get over the bar at 1.90m, finishing fourth overall. That height proved decisive, as Nigeria’s Temitope Simbiat Adeshina cleared it to claim bronze. The gap between Distin and a medal came down to just three centimeters.
Australia’s Eleanor Patterson took gold, matching the Games record with a clearance of 1.96m to defend her Commonwealth title. Teammate Nicola Olyslagers finished behind her for silver, clearing 1.93m.
After battling through heavy rain that brought the competition to a temporary halt, Distin later summed up the evening on social media: “Rough day, but we have to move.”
Jamaica saw no better fortune in the hammer throw. Nayoka Clunis failed to record a legal mark in the event, ending her competition without a result. Canada’s Camryn Rogers, the reigning Olympic champion, set a new Games record of 74.91m to win comfortably. New Zealand’s Lauren Bruce took second at 69.82m, and Australia’s Lara Roberts rounded out the podium at 68.05m.
On the track, Jamaica placed its hopes in Jodean Williams and Jonielle Smith for the women’s 100 meters after both runners advanced from the semifinal round. Williams crossed the line fifth in 11.09 seconds, a time she shared with Canada’s Audrey Leduc. Smith did not take her place in the final.
The women’s 100m title went to New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs, who ran an Oceanian record and personal best of 10.93 seconds to win going away. England’s Amy Hunt claimed silver in 10.98 seconds, while Australia’s Torrie Lewis set a national record of 10.99 seconds for bronze.
Jamaica’s hopes of a medal in the men’s 100m came to an end in the semifinals. Rohan Watson finished sixth in Semifinal 1 in 10.12 seconds, while Ackeem Blake placed third in Semifinal 3 in 10.06 seconds, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
The men’s 100m final went ahead without a Jamaican sprinter for the first time in recent memory. Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme ran 9.83 seconds to win, setting both a Games record and a national record in the process. Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy finished second in 9.85 seconds, an area record and personal best for him. Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi took bronze in 9.90 seconds, and South Africa’s Gift Leotlela placed fourth in 9.91 seconds.
