Five-time Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah will race the 100m and 200m at Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern on Thursday (16 Jul), meet organizers confirmed. The Silver-level World Athletics Continental Tour event will be held in Luzern, Switzerland.
Thompson-Herah will face a strong group of Swiss sprinters. Géraldine Di Tizio-Frey, Ajla Del Ponte, and Salomé Kora are all entered in the sprint events alongside the Jamaican star.
The meet will also feature several Swiss athletes coming off strong showings at the 2024 European Championships in Rome. Six European medallists from that competition are set to compete in Luzern. Mujinga Kambundji will run the 100m, while Timothé Mumenthaler is entered in both the 100m and 200m. William Reais will race the 200m, and Dominic Lobalu will compete in the 3000m. Jason Joseph will take on the 110m hurdles, and Angelica Moser will jump in the pole vault.
Annik Kalin, the current world heptathlon leader, will also compete in Luzern. She is entered in the long jump.
Not all top Swiss athletes will be on hand, however. Simon Ehammer has withdrawn from the meet after suffering a hamstring injury in Monaco last Friday. He is targeting a return at the Swiss Championships instead.
Ehammer addressed the setback on Instagram, expressing confidence in his recovery. “Despite the circumstances I’m confident this is just a small setback – one step back, two steps forward,” he wrote.
The meet takes place Thursday and will bring together a mix of Olympic-level talent and rising Swiss stars across sprint, distance, and field events.
